The Steve And Bret Story -- Steve and Bret met way back in high school... two geeks with guitars. Steve could play everything; Bret nothing. Undaunted, they formed a band, The Rubber Band Band. One gig, One song... suckage. Graduation... College bound... new bands... all covers... more suckage.
But things change... In 1991, Bret dropped by Tara's house to visit her roommate (Sarah). There was a piano in the living room and while Bret waited for Sarah to come out of her room he played Floyd on the piano. Tara sang along. He kept playing different songs and she kept singing along. It seemed they shared a love for a lot of the same music. "Hey cool, you know this one. Right on. "
In 1992, Bret, Tara, and some other SLO locals formed a band called Peace Frog. While forming the band, Tara ran into this energetic guy, Jack, at a local bar. She noticed he was wearing a necklace charmed with music notes. She asked, "You like music, huh?" Jack immediately exploded into a percussive rendition. Peace Frog was primarily a cover band, but it was good experience for us to get out and perform in front of people.
During this same time another local band, Blackberry Jam, was gigging too. They shared the bill with Peace Frog some nights at Sweet Spring Saloon in Los Osos. Bret and Tara quickly noticed their bass player, Wyeth Stiles. "Sure would be nice to have a bass player like Mr. Stiles." At one of the shared gigs, Bret, Tara and Wyeth played a blues song that Bret wrote ( with help from Blackberry Jam's improvisation skills). It sound good, and Mr. Stiles really turned them on.
A year later after Blackberry Jam went their own ways. Steve and Bret were living in Morro Bay, and they gave Wyeth a call. He came over and Steve, Bret, Tara, and Wyeth began writing songs in the blue log cabin.
Now....if we could only find a drummer. Aaaaah... drummers... they're such flakes! Or, they want a raging group of a million zit faced teenagers raising their fists saying "We salute you" and "Rock on, dude".
Anyways, Bret finally happened across Howard in the Drum Circuit (the drum shop of the Central Coast).
Howard: "What are you doing?" Bret:"Putting up a flyer for a drummer." Howard: "What kind of band?" Bret: "Blah blah blah" Howard: "Cool Blah blah blah" Bret: "Ooo, you have a lot of Jimi Hendrix tapes." Howard: "And Miles Davis" Bret: "Want to jam?" Howard: "OK"
